Storage holds your files; memory (RAM) supports the work a computer is doing. They solve different problems and require different compatibility checks.
Decide what you want to improve
Running out of space points towards storage. Difficulty running several applications may involve memory, but check the device's specifications and workload before choosing an upgrade.
Match an internal drive
Check the computer's service documentation for supported form factor, interface, physical dimensions and capacity limits. M.2 is a form factor: an M.2 drive should not be assumed to work in every M.2 slot. Confirm whether the slot supports the proposed drive's interface.
Match RAM exactly
Check the supported memory generation, module format, capacity per slot, total capacity and any ECC requirements. Some devices have soldered memory and cannot be upgraded. Use the exact model or service identifier when requesting a match.
Choose external storage
Compare capacity, connection compatibility, portability and the type of files you use. Check supported operating systems and any power requirements. Keep a separate backup of important files; one external drive containing the only copy is not a backup.
Before replacing a component
Back up your data and check the manufacturer's installation instructions. Send us the exact computer model and existing component part number if you need help checking a replacement.
