Choose a rack around the equipment, its weight, cabling and the space needed to install and maintain it.
List the equipment
Record the dimensions, weight and mounting method of each device. Check rack width compatibility and add up the rack units required. Devices without rack mounting may need suitable shelves.
Check usable depth
Allow space for connectors, cable bends, power leads and airflow as well as the device itself. Compare usable mounting depth with equipment dimensions; the cabinet's outside depth is not enough to confirm fit.
Plan access and ventilation
Decide whether a wall-mounted or floor-standing cabinet suits the location. Check load limits, door clearance, maintenance access and the manufacturer's ventilation requirements. Consider heat and noise in the room.
Allow for accessories
Plan patch panels, cable management, shelves and a suitable power distribution unit. Leave capacity for expansion. Confirm mounting hardware is compatible with the rack and equipment.
Before installation
Measure the installation area and delivery route. For wall mounting, have the wall construction, fixings and combined load assessed by a competent installer. A rack plan should include both equipment and cables.
